  • Make your presence felt: Feltmaking (Residential workshop in partnership with Selvedge Magazine and Chateau Dumas)

All levels of ability are welcome.

This workshop will help you discover your creative approach to felt-making.  There are so many possibilities in the medium; the aim of the week is to discover and develop your unique creative approach, process and solutions and to find your own artistic language with the wool, all within the framework of a nature based theme. During 5 days of tuition you will be guided through preparatory work, such as studying line, texture, tone, scale and composition through a series of samples and will be utilizing various felting techniques, such as how to create a 3D shape using a resist, blending natural colours and creating textural effects.

Depending on your experience, you will either make an artpiece based on textures and patterns from the natural world or tackle something more ambitious such as a series of free-standing sculptural forms based on seed pods, buds and plants. You’ll learn to stitch and manipulate both during and after the feltmaking process and you’ll get a sense of how you can push the boundaries of this versatile material. The week will culminate in a series of free-standing or wall-mounted medium-sized objects which can range from figurative to abstract.

During the week we will visit a goat farm locally and pick up some angora and have a day of woad dyeing.

Students are asked to bring their own notebooks.

Date: Sat 12 – Sat 19 August 2017.  Please note this is a fully residential workshop.

Venue: Chateau Dumas, 82220 AUTY, Nr. Toulouse, FRANCE
