Young talent

Every year my local contemporary art centre Black Swan Arts organises a unique arts competition for creative kids of all ages.

The winners of the Young Open Art Competition came to the Main Gallery at the Black Swan on Saturday 22nd March for a special preview and to meet the competition judges, Mayor of Frome Dickon Moore, renowned artist Mark Karasick and Sinead Foley, the creator of the shop Seed.

The doors of the gallery had to open early to admit the crowd of over 100 children and parents who had come for the prize giving.

The 12 winning artists received certificates and prize vouchers for workshops with local established artists. I was really delighted to have been asked to provide one of these workshops, and today I welomed 12-yr old Phoebe and her mum in the studio for a workshop on 3-d feltmaking. We started off the day making simple bangles to explain the principles behind the process, and proceeded making some colourful pod-shaped vessels. Phoebe is a delightful, talented and hands on young lady, I hope I’ve managed to add some more skills to her repertoire.
